(Solanum lycopersicum) This purple tomato with green-gold marbling has an oval shape like the Pink Bumble Bee. The plant's compact, indeterminate vines produce small, sweet, crack-resistant cherry tomatoes over a long period. Pick fruit when purple-striped and slightly soft. Suitable for salads or snacking, these tomatoes are sweet and grow in gardens, beds, or greenhouses.
Genus: Solanum.
Type: Self-Pollinating, Heirloom, non-GMO.
Origin: Bred by Fred Hempel of Artisan Seeds (also known as Baia Nicchia Farm) in California and released around 2014 as part of his 'Bumble Bee' series.
Indeterminate Tomatoes
Vine tomatoes continue to grow, bloom, and produce fruit right up until the first frost of autumn. They can grow as tall as 6 to 12 feet and require sturdy supports, such as cages or trellises, to stay upright. Many home gardeners prefer indeterminate tomatoes because they provide a steady harvest of fresh tomatoes over two to three months.
Grow Tip:
Repurpose old T-shirts by cutting them into strips to tie plants to stakes, which helps prevent damage to your plants.
